Ford employee Mary Mason, who works at the Ford River Rouge Complex in Dearborn, Michigan, has taken up the task of tending to tens of thousands of honeybees right outside the complex. Honeybee populations have been steadily declining for decades, and Mason hopes to combat the decline by supporting the more than 80,000 bees installed in two beehives on the grounds of the Rouge plant.
Factors such as Colony Collapse Disorder, pesticides, and parasites have had serious negative effects on US honeybees, one of our vital pollinating species. Ford is working with Mason to further its wildlife habitat strategy, which over the last 15 years has turned the Rouge Complex from a plain gray building to a place where nature thrives.
The Heritage 2000 Program started Ford’s environmental initiatives, where they brought in a sustainability designer to make over the complex. Because the complex already has flowering crabapple trees on their grounds, it seemed like a perfect fit for the honeybees.
The Ford complex honeybees were introduced to the orchard thirteen years ago, and Mason, who brought some of her own bees in as well, has volunteered to take care of them for the last three. Mason shared that the die-off rate of bees in Michigan is 60 to 70%, and she’s glad for the chance to care for the bees in a pesticide-free environment.
Getting your car ready for winter is important when it comes to safety and maintenance. Wintertime brings colder temperatures, harsh weather, and more traffic around the holidays. Follow some of these basic winter car tips to keep you and your car protected during the upcoming months.
According to Kiplinger, one of the first things you should consider are winter tires. All-season tires are practical, but winter tires are specially designed for the season—as the name implies. These tires come with special rubber compounds that stand up in cold weather, as well as deep treads for added grip. Many winter tires also have special trenches to divert water, which prevents hydroplaning.
Next, get new wipers. You should replace wipers at least once a year. Wiper blades are especially important in the winter, when melting ice and snow can blur your windshield. Also, top off your wiper fluid with deicer to help improve visibility in bad weather.
Have your battery professionally checked. Cold temperatures wreak havoc on electrical systems, which is the major reason batteries tend to die in the winter. If your battery is more than three years old or if the juice is running low, consider getting a replacement as soon as possible. No one wants to get stranded in the winter.
Finally, wax your lights. This might sound strange, but winter is often accompanied by short days and less sunlight. Waxing the lights can prevent ice and snow from building up, and it also removes dirt and grime. Better visibility leads to better safety.
What happens when you cross two American icons with one American dream? You get the Coca-Cola Journey. This September, Ford teamed up with Coca-Cola to take an all-American cross-country road trip. A customized 2017 Ford Escape compact SUV was decked out in classic Coke red, a special hashtag and, of course, a custom cooler for bottles of Coke in the rear cargo area.
Coca-Cola’s cross-country trip started at the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta. Members of the Coca-Cola Journey team loaded into the 2017 Ford Escape and a matching motorhome that housed them along their way. The crew departed on September 13th with plans to arrive in Los Angeles on October 5th. Throughout their trip, they covered roughly 4,000 miles of America, making over 20 stops along the way in cities like Chicago, Dallas, Denver and Santa Fe.
Team members worked to document their trip using the hashtag #JourneyXJourney. This hashtag allowed them to connect with consumers on different social media platforms, while their presence in each city let them reach out to consumers one-on-one in person. Coca-Cola’s cross-country road trip team worked to capture their stories along the way, and to reconnect with the Coca-Cola brand’s deep ties to American culture across the country.
Throughout the year, there are some items that are important to keep in your vehicle at all times – such as a first-aid kit, jumper cables, and a spare tire, as well as the appropriate tools to install it.
But as the weather slowly turns from summer to winter, there are unique fall hazards that may require to have a bit more. That’s why we suggest that you prepare a fall emergency kit to store in your vehicle, just in case.
Here are some items to consider:
- A warm blanket or two, as well as an extra pair of gloves, an extra hat, an extra scarf, and maybe even an extra coat
- A tire gauge and a travel kit to add air pressure to your tires, as tires quickly deflate in cooler weather
- A spare cell phone and charger, perhaps with a hand-written list of emergency phone numbers
- An ice scraper, so that you will be ready when that unexpected first snowfall covers your vehicle
- Similarly, a small shovel might save the day if your car gets snowed in
- Lastly, consider some non-perishable snacks, such as nuts and dried fruit, to give you energy if you find yourself stuck somewhere

The 2017 Ford F-150 Super Duty is already one of the toughest, most powerful trucks on the road. And now, Ford has upgraded the model’s fuel tank capacity, giving the new Ford F-150 Super Duty the largest fuel tank capacity in its segment.
The new fuel tank can hold up to 48 gallons of gasoline, which is a 22-percent increase over the original 37.5 that was previously standard in the model, an enormous leap in capacity. Between the new fuel tank and the model’s impressive fuel economy, you’ll find yourself rarely at the gas station.
This should make a different not only for people who use their Ford F-150 Super Duty for work but also those who enjoy driving their truck for every tasks, saving you time and money otherwise wasted at the pump.
In addition to the increased F-150 Super Duty fuel tank, the vehicle even comes with seating for six people and all the latest technology, such as SYNC 3, making it an excellent choice for basically any driver.

The components that make up a vehicle are composed of a variety of different materials. Trimming on the inside can be wood, while the exterior body can be made up of aluminum. Ford uses a variety of different materials to create their cars, trucks, and crossovers. However, the latest material that Ford has decided to look into is surprising, yet represents the “spirit” of Ford ingenuity.
According to a Ford press release, Ford is investigating the use of Agave-based car parts.
The Agave plant is most known for being the primary ingredient in Tequila. However, the team at Ford has discovered that a plastic alloy can be created from the byproducts of the Agave plant as well. Ford is now teaming up with Jose Cuervo to discover what kinds of car components can be created out of the Agave.
“There are about 400 pounds of plastic on a typical car,” said Debbie Mielewski, Ford senior technical leader, sustainability research department. “Our job is to find the right place for a green composite like this to help our impact on the planet. It is work that I’m really proud of, and it could have broad impact across numerous industries.”
Ford is continually working to find ways to make their vehicles more sustainable. That’s a cause that we can lift a glass to. Just not on the road!

We at Shults Ford of Harmarville know how important it is to stay connected when on the road. Technology can be used for navigation assistance, hands-free calling, and many other convenient features.
Ford has recently announced the first Ford vehicle with Apple CarPlay, the iPhone-connected CarPlay system. This vehicle will be the 2017 Ford Escape, which goes on sale this May. We have known since January that Ford was working on this connective technology, but now we have a first official release vehicle.
Ford stated that this technology will make the ownership experience easier, through features such as remote door lock and remote start. These vehicle features are available with the new FordPass platform. The Escape will also be the first vehicle to offer SYNC3, which features both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The SYNC Connect option will also help with “driver-assist” technology, such as parking, and lane control. With CarPlay, drivers with iPhones can use iOS features through the dashboard display.
If you recently bought a Ford though, do not worry. Several of the 2016 models will be able to update the technology to use CarPlay through an upcoming software update.
