The Lunar New Year is an important tradition in Chinese culture. It celebrates the turn of the lunisolar Chinese calendar, which acknowledges both the sun and the moon phase. Celebrations traditionally include beautiful dances, fireworks, and huge feasts with family and friends.
We’re entering the Year of the Rooster, and in the Greater Pittsburgh area we’re entering it with a bang. Thanks to Squirrel Hill and the local Chinese community, the Greater Pittsburgh Area will see its own Lunar New Year celebration this year, as it has many years before. Plenty of free, inspiring, and family friendly events will take place to celebrate this Chinese tradition.
Celebrations begin on January 21st with the OCA Lunar New Year Banquet, held at the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Hall. The banquet will consist of a traditional Chinese dinner, plus entertainment and a silent auction. Tickets are limited, so get yours now! After the feast, guests can head to the auditorium to watch the OCA Pittsburgh Celebrates Asia! Lunar New Year Show which will present more cultural performances.
But if you miss the banquet, don’t fret. From January 28th to February 12th, more traditional entertainment, including lion dances, Chinese folk dance, music, and martial arts will take place in the Pittsburgh area. The festivities culminate in the Lunar New Year Parade in Squirrel Hill. Make sure you catch some of the many opportunities to celebrate these enchanting traditions!
