Ford Drone Research: Exploring New Types of Mobility
Ford is a world leader in the auto industry, but the brand also has a few other roles in other markets. In particular, Ford recently started performing drone research.
If you’ve watched any type of aerial video or seen photography taken from the air in the recent past, it was likely taken by a drone. Drones are also being used in agriculture to help map plots, in infrastructure to help with planning, and now in the automotive world.
Ford drone research is groundbreaking, and there are a few reasons an auto company is investing in this type of research. According to Ford, the brand has tried experimenting with anti-collision lights that several drones create to increase visibility at night. There are currently about 1.9 million drones floating around, and that number is increasing every day.
“To integrate new technology into vehicles, we need to develop a good understanding of how it works, how it can be used and what its limitations are,” said John Luo, Research Manager for Ford Research. “We frequently conduct experiments on individual vehicle components to understand as much as we can about them, so we bring only the best into our vehicles. Now we’re doing that with drones.”
