Outdoor Adventures on the Great Allegheny Passage

As summer draws nearer, people start to get restless for outdoor activity in the great outdoors. There’s nothing quite like enjoying nature in the warm, carefree atmosphere of summertime. If you’re looking for something fun and outdoorsy to do near Pittsburgh, why don’t you take the opportunity to explore the Great Allegheny Passage? With 335 miles of outdoor adventure stretching across Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C., there is much to be explored on this massive, famous trail.

The main GAP trail is 150 miles long and joins with the 185-mile C&O Canal Towpath in order to form the full length of the entire passage; however, the trails themselves are mostly flat and level, making them ideal for hiking and bicycling. Acclaimed as one of the best and longest trails on the eastern half of the United States, the Great Allegheny Passage provides the experience of a lifetime for anyone who takes the time to take in the entire trail.

The Great Allegheny Passage isn’t just trees and wilderness, either. The trail takes explorers past a variety of trail towns, local restaurants, as well as landmarks that include Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright. Some towns along the trail will even have local events and festivals that occur annually, so be sure to check event calendars before embarking on your journey.

There is no experience in the United States quite like that of the Great Allegheny Passage. With bike rentals for those casual explorers interested in new experiences, or plenty of room for hikers and cyclists to share the road, the GAP trail is a great place for people looking to have fun and spend time in the beautiful wilderness of the East Coast.

Ford Free Brake Pad Offer Helps Keep Customers Safe

Ford Free Brake Pad Offer Helps Keep Customers SafeNothing is more annoying than discovering that your car’s warranty has run out mere days before you need a repair—especially when it comes to buying new brake pads. To ensure that their customers don’t hesitate when their brakes start squealing, Ford has announced a free brake pad offer that is sure to get you into your local Ford dealership service center, lickity split.

Basically, if you own a Ford Motor Company vehicle (Ford, Lincoln or Mercury) and you purchase a set of Motorcraft brake pads, you are entitled to free replacement pads for as long as you own the vehicle. All you need to do is take it in to your Ford or Lincoln dealer or a Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center.

“This program reflects our commitment to providing customers with an excellent ownership experience regardless of the age of their vehicles,” said Frederiek Toney, President of Ford Customer Service. “Plus, when you purchase Motorcraft parts at a Ford or Lincoln dealer, or a Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center, you know you’re getting the right parts installed by the right people.”

Keep in mind that there are a few exceptions to this, since Ford isn’t just handing out free brakes. The pads have to be worn down to less than three millimeters to be eligible and the buyer also has to pay for labor still. Also, fleet and commercial vehicles are excluded from the offer.

As of July 1, any purchases made for qualified vehicles will be part of the free brake pad offer. To get your chance to partake in this opportunity, stop in to Shults Ford of Harmarville today!

Mark Fields to Replace Alan Mulally as Ford CEO

After 8 years at the head of Ford, Alan Mulally announced his retirement and the official date is set for July 1st of this year.  At Shults Ford of Harmarville, we were saddened by this news because Mulally has been a great CEO for the company over his 8 years at the helm and has even been called a “hall-of-fame CEO” by Bill Ford, Henry Ford’s great-grandson.  Our spirits were lifted however, when the new CEO was announced.  Mark Fields, Ford’s current Chief Operating Officer will be stepping up and filling Mulally’s shoes come July!

Fields has been with The Blue Oval for the past 25 years and has been training for this position for several of those 25.  Mulally could not be more confident in handing the reigns over to Fields and claims that he has “nothing left to teach or talk to Mark about.”

While we are still not sure who will be replacing Fields as the Chief Operating Officer, we can say with confidence that we know Ford will appoint someone with the same dedication to the company as both Fields and Mulally have exhibited throughout the years.

We wish all the best to Alan Mulally and we thank him for everything he has done for Ford.  We also want to wish the best of luck to Mark Fields and we can’t wait to see what he has in store for the future of Ford!

The 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible Takes to the Big Apple

2015 Ford Mustang convertible

As many of you know, the Ford Mustang celebrated its 50th anniversary recently and to commemorate the last 50 years, Ford celebrated in the same way it did with the very first Ford Mustang convertible: the put the 2015 Ford Mustang convertible on top of the Empire State Building.  It’s sitting on the 86th floor observation deck to be exact.

As a country, we may be more technologically advanced than what we were 50 years ago, but the Mustang had to make its way to the top just like it did 50 years ago; on the only freight elevator.  In order to do this, it had to be cut in precise measurements to make sure it would fit on the elevator and then be rebuilt when it reached the top.

From the videos below, those of us at Shults Ford of Harmarville can see what a time consuming and difficult project this was.  This Michigan-based company built a mockup of the freight elevator, and then practiced the cuts on a second pre-production Ford Mustang convertible.  They were ready when it came time to make the cuts on the Mustang being taken to the top.

The result certainly is astounding!  What better way to celebrate the past 50 years of greatness?

Preparing for Winter Weather

Preparing for Winter Weather

Snow on the windshield already?

Whether we like it or not, winter is well on its way. While we love building snowmen, cozying up by the fire, drinking hot chocolate and the holiday season, winter is not necessarily our car’s favorite season. Lucky for you and your car, Shults Ford is here to help prepare you for winter weather.

  • Check the engine coolant: You car’s coolant is designed to keep your engine from overheating as well as protect it from corrosion. It’s important to make sure the coolant has the proper mix of water and antifreeze before the weather gets too cold.
  • Check the oil: Typically when the temperature outside changes, the internal temperature of your engine changes as well. Since weather around Pittsburgh drops below freezing in the winter, you will want to switch to a thinner, less viscous oil. It will help protect internal temperatures.
  • Check the battery: Batteries can be sneaky little parts. They don’t give us much notice before dying. During the winter, cold temperatures can reduce car battery life up to 50 percent. Have a mechanic test your battery before the cold weather really hits.
  • Check your tires: When the roads get wet, snowy and icy, properly inflated tires will help guarantee better traction. If you’re really worried about the roads this winter, consider snow tires.
  • Check windshield wiper blades and fluid: Nothing’s worse than getting in the car, it starts pouring, and your wipers do nothing but smear water around the windshield. Make sure that you not only check the condition of the blades, but also make sure wiper fluid is full.

As always, Shults Ford is here to make sure your car is all ready for winter weather.  Bring it in today and have one of our certified mechanics give it a good inspection and replace anything that needs done. See you soon!
